Thorium Fuel Cycles: Issues, Activities, Opportunities
A worldwide expansion of commercial nuclear power plants will help foster global energy and economic security. A domestic expansion of non-carbon electric capacity will lend major support to the United StatesÂ’ energy security posture. For nuclear to fulfill its environmental and economic potential through that expansion of electricity production - for a world less concerned about the proliferation risks associated with sensitive nuclear facilities - a renaissance of the thorium option is a cause worth pursuing and bringing to technical and economic maturity, by countries having thorium reserves and by those having the technical competence and determination to make nuclear energy more sustainable for all. This presentation will address recent work assessing front- and back-end aspects of proposed thorium fuel cycles, including; the resource base, waste management and non-proliferation considerations. Various fuel compositions are being considered in different reactor types [LWRs, PHWRs, HTGRs]. Additionally, domestic and global political landscape issues will be discussed, as pertains to on-going and developing thorium work and initiatives.
