Abstract: Mr. Thompson will provide a brief overview of the history of waste management from 3000 BC through today and introduce some of the radioactive waste management practices used in this country during the Cold War. Mr. Thompson will highlight how waste management practices used during the Cold War, which were arguably appropriate considering the context of the times, and certain radioactive waste management practices which are still in use today, result in intergenerational burdens and undermine public confidence in nuclear power. Mr. Thompson will highlight how intergenerational burdens can be minimized and public confidence in nuclear power can be increased by implementing waste management decisions based on comprehensive life-cycle assessments. The presentation will include images of the Cold War, the age of nuclear pop culture in the 1950s, and waste management practices used today. All students and faculty are invited to attend. UTNE Graduate Students who hold Assistantships or Fellowships are required to attend in person. Refreshments will be provided in 219 Pasqua immediately following the colloquium.
